Sliema is one of Malta’s easiest bases, but “Sliema” on a hotel search covers several very different experiences. Stay near the ferry and Valletta becomes your neighbour across the water. Stay toward Balluta and you are closer to St Julian’s. Choose the exposed seafront and you gain swimming access and views, while an inland street may be quieter and cheaper.

Malta can be an affordable Mediterranean trip if you control accommodation and transport instead of trying to save a few cents on every coffee. The islands offer free historic streets, public viewpoints, swimming spots, coastal walks and inexpensive local snacks, but summer hotel prices and repeated taxis can quickly destroy a budget.

You can visit Malta very successfully without renting a car. In fact, if your trip is centred on Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Mdina, the Three Cities and the main ferry connections, avoiding a car can make the holiday easier. Parking is limited in many historic and coastal areas, traffic can be slow, and driving on the left adds an unnecessary learning curve for some visitors.
