Sliema is one of Malta’s easiest bases, but “Sliema” on a hotel search covers several very different experiences. Stay near the ferry and Valletta becomes your neighbour across the water. Stay toward Balluta and you are closer to St Julian’s. Choose the exposed seafront and you gain swimming access and views, while an inland street may be quieter and cheaper.

Staying in Valletta gives you something day visitors miss: the capital after the cruise crowds and excursion groups have left. At night, limestone streets become calmer, restaurant terraces feel more local and Grand Harbour viewpoints take on a completely different atmosphere. The price is that Valletta is not a beach resort, parking is awkward and its steep streets can be inconvenient with luggage or limited mobility.

Malta works especially well for couples because the islands combine short travel distances with very different moods. You can spend a morning inside Valletta’s baroque streets, swim in clear water in the afternoon and finish the day with dinner beside a harbour. Add Mdina after sunset or two nights on Gozo and the trip becomes much more romantic than a simple beach break.
