Malta Airport Guide: How to Get to Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s and Gozo

A practical Malta International Airport transfer guide with buses, taxis, shuttles, rental cars and routes to the main tourist areas.

Malta International Airport is close to most major tourist areas, but the fastest transfer is not always the cheapest and the cheapest is not always the smartest after a late flight. Because Malta is compact, visitors often assume every hotel is ten minutes from the terminal. In reality, traffic and the location of your accommodation can turn a short distance into a much longer journey.

This guide explains the current airport bus network, official taxis, shared shuttles, rental cars and the most practical way to reach Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Mellieħa and the Gozo ferry. Use it together with our complete Malta transport guide once you have checked where you are staying.

Airport Direct buses: the current network

Malta Public Transport now operates Airport Direct services connecting the terminal with major visitor areas. The current network lists TD1 toward Rabat, Buġibba, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa; TD2 toward St Julian’s and Pembroke; TD3 toward St Julian’s, Sliema, Gżira and Msida; TD4 toward Valletta and the Gozo Fast Ferry area; and TD5 toward Rabat and Buġibba. The exact stopping pattern and timetable should always be checked before travel.

At the time of this guide, the official page lists TD2, TD3 and TD4 roughly every 30 minutes, while TD1 and TD5 are hourly. Confirm on Malta Public Transport’s Airport Direct page because seasonal changes are normal.

Regular buses

Regular routes also serve the airport and can be useful if your accommodation is not convenient for an Airport Direct stop. They cost less but may stop more frequently. Tickets can be purchased on board, and travel cards are sold at the airport through public transport sales points and machines. For a one-week trip with frequent bus use, compare the current visitor cards rather than paying separately every time.

Taxi from Malta Airport

Malta International Airport confirms that taxi services are available 24 hours a day. Pre-paid tickets at fixed rates can be purchased from the taxi booth in the Welcomers’ Hall. This is the simplest choice after a late arrival, for families with luggage or for travellers staying in a small street that would otherwise require a bus plus a walk.

Do not compare taxi and bus purely by headline price. Four adults paying separately for an airport bus or shuttle may find that a taxi becomes more reasonable, especially when divided among the group. The value is highest at night, in bad weather or when the alternative involves a transfer.

Official shared hotel shuttle

Malta Transfer operates the airport’s official shared shuttle to popular areas including Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Gżira, Qawra, Buġibba, St Paul’s Bay and Xemxija. The airport currently advertises fares starting from €6 one way, though final cost depends on route and booking. Shared shuttles are slower than a private taxi because they may drop passengers at several hotels, but they can be useful for solo travellers.

Rental car: should you collect it at the airport?

Collecting a rental car at the airport is convenient if your itinerary genuinely needs one from day one. It makes sense for a rural base, multiple beaches, an early Gozo crossing or accommodation with reliable parking. It makes less sense if you are spending the first three nights in Valletta or Sliema, where parking adds stress and public transport/ferries work well.

If you do rent, remember that Malta drives on the left. Photograph the car at collection, confirm the fuel policy and understand any security deposit or excess. For commercial car-rental comparison links, keep the booking conditions in front of the cheapest headline rate.

Airport to Valletta

Valletta is among the easiest destinations. Airport Direct TD4 links the terminal with Valletta, and regular bus services provide additional options. A taxi is useful for late arrivals or heavy luggage because some Valletta streets involve slopes and pedestrian sections. If your hotel is inside the old city, check exactly where a vehicle can drop you.

Airport to Sliema

Airport Direct TD3 serves the Sliema/Gżira corridor. Sliema is long rather than compact, so identify the nearest stop to your accommodation. A hotel near Tigné Point and a hotel near Exiles can both be labelled Sliema but require different final walks. See our Sliema guide for the neighbourhood differences.

Airport to St Julian’s

TD2 and TD3 both serve the St Julian’s area in different ways. If you are staying near Paceville, Spinola Bay or Balluta, check the actual stop name rather than assuming “St Julian’s” is one location. After midnight, a taxi is usually the least complicated option. Our St Julian’s guide explains which sub-area suits each type of traveller.

Airport to Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa

TD1 links the airport corridor with Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa, making the north easier without changing in Valletta. This is particularly useful for travellers heading directly toward Gozo or staying in Mellieħa. Because it runs less frequently than the central-area Airport Direct services, timing matters more.

Airport to Gozo

There is no airport on Gozo for normal international arrivals, so you must continue by sea. One option is to travel north to Ċirkewwa and take the Gozo Channel ferry to Mġarr. Another is to reach Valletta and use a fast ferry when the schedule suits. If you land late, check the final ferry and bus connections before departure rather than improvising after baggage claim.

My Malta Trip tip: If you land after 22:00, save your hotel address, reception phone number and transfer plan before the flight. A late arrival is the wrong moment to discover that the last convenient bus does not stop near your hotel.

Where to buy bus tickets at the airport

Malta International Airport lists public-transport sales facilities in the Welcomers’ Hall and ticket machines around the terminal area, and tickets can also be purchased on buses. Visitor cards can simplify a week of frequent travel, but do not buy a long-duration product automatically if you plan to use taxis, ferries and a rental car for much of the trip.

How much transfer time should you allow on departure day?

Road traffic is the variable. A journey that was quick on arrival may be slower during the morning or evening peak. Add buffer rather than aiming to reach the airport at the last possible minute. If you are coming from Gozo on the same day as your flight, allow an even larger margin for the ferry, road transfer and potential weather disruption.

The best transfer choice by traveller type

  • Solo traveller in daytime: Airport Direct or shared shuttle
  • Couple with light luggage: Airport Direct if the stop is convenient
  • Family with children and suitcases: taxi or private transfer
  • Group of four: compare taxi cost before buying four separate tickets
  • Late-night arrival: taxi/private transfer
  • Direct trip to Gozo: TD1 or pre-arranged road transfer to Ċirkewwa, depending on ferry timing
  • Valletta city break: TD4 or taxi; no need to collect a car immediately

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way from Malta Airport to the tourist areas?

Public transport is normally the cheapest mainstream option. Malta Public Transport operates regular routes and Airport Direct services to several major visitor zones. The best route depends on your destination and arrival time, so check the official journey planner after landing rather than relying on an old route number copied from a blog post.

Are taxis available late at night at Malta Airport?

Yes. Malta International Airport states that taxi service is available around the clock and uses a pre-paid system with fixed fares for destinations. This is useful after a late flight when bus frequency is reduced or when you have children and luggage. Use the official taxi arrangements at the terminal rather than accepting unsolicited offers.

How do you get from Malta Airport to Gozo?

There is no direct road to Gozo, so your journey combines airport transport with a sea crossing. Depending on your plan, travel toward Ċirkewwa for the conventional ferry or toward Valletta for the fast-ferry connection. Compare total journey time, the location of your Gozo accommodation and the current schedules before deciding which route is more convenient.

Should you collect a rental car at the airport?

Only if the car fits your itinerary. Airport collection is convenient for travellers staying in rural Malta, Mellieħa or Gozo and planning many independent stops. If your first days are in Valletta, Sliema or St Julian’s, parking and urban traffic can outweigh the benefit. A split rental—collecting later—can be a smarter compromise.

Final thoughts

Malta Airport is not difficult to navigate, and the modern Airport Direct network has made public transport more useful for visitors. The key is choosing based on the final 500 metres as much as the main journey. A bus that drops you beside the hotel is excellent; a cheaper bus that leaves you dragging luggage uphill at midnight is not. Match the transfer to arrival time, group size and exact accommodation location.
